What They Say About ‘KINDLE FIRE HDX 8.9″, HDX DISPLAY, WI-FI, 16 GB – INCLUDES SPECIAL OFFERS (PREVIOUS GENERATION – 3RD)’

Updated 12/8/2014

One year in…

This review is for the the no-ad 64 GB wifi-only HDX 8.9.

I use a Galaxy S5 Android smartphone so the HDX is for media / web surfing / offline viewing for travel. Since I had already been using Amazon Prime and Prime Music it was a no brainer for me to use the HDX to fill the role of media / web surfing on a tablet.

Be informed about the download limitations to this device. Amazon has been adding clarification to this which should help would-be purchasers make a more informed opinion. This wasn’t as obvious as it should have been when I ordered mine so they’re listening which is good.

Be aware that their most popular Prime content *may* not be available to download (and save) to your HDX. You can save certain videos to your HDX but you won’t know which ones until you buy an HDX and try it out. *** Edited 12/21/2013 You can now see a list of Prime movies and shows that can be downloaded to the device. That’s an improvement and more clearly shows the available downloadable Prime content. +1 for Amazon. ***

I was also under the assumption that you could download as many videos as you’d like with the limiting factor being the memory capacity of the HDX. Also NOT the case. So again, I bought the larger capacity HDX under this assumption. That was dumb on my part as it turns out because you’re not limited by storage capacity. You’re limited the NUMBER of downloads you can have on your device. Kids’ content can be really short so you may find yourself running into that limitation, but most people never will. Many people will opt up for the 64 GB device like I did only to find that 16 GB would likely do fine since it would be hard to download enough content to fill 64 GB, particularly on ‘standard’ resolution. As another commenter pointed out if you downloaded long movies in full HD perhaps you’d really want the bigger device. Which brings me to the final point.

The final criticism is that once you start watching content you have to finish watching the content within 48 hours or you need to reconnect to the internet. Again, I was surprised to find out that the content I downloaded expired. This is odd since you’d download because you were likely traveling to a location that didn’t have wifi. Hopefully these criticisms lead to a more informed purchase decision on your part.

Here is the official word from Amazon which is indeed on their site and the purpose for my edit. I was unable to find this prior to my purchase and learned about it only after I acquired the device.

* Many (but not all as I note above) Prime Instant Video titles are also available for download on Kindle Fire HD 2nd Generation and Kindle Fire HDX devices. The detail page for each Prime Instant Video title indicates whether the title is available for download. You can download available titles to only two separate devices at one time. If you have already downloaded a title to two devices, you need to delete it from one of them before downloading it to another device.

* You can have a maximum of 25 total Prime Instant Video titles downloaded at a time across all devices associated with your Amazon.com account. While not all Prime Instant Video titles are available for download, the same videos may be available for rental or purchase from Amazon Instant Video, and rented or purchased titles can be downloaded to compatible devices.

* Viewing Period: If you have a Prime membership or Prime free trial, you can stream any video that is currently designated as a Prime Instant Video title on its detail page. You can watch Prime Instant Video titles that you’ve downloaded within a limited viewing period, which varies by title. A typical viewing period is either 48 hours after you start watching the title or 15 or 30 days after the download, whichever is earlier. We’ll typically notify you when the viewing period for a title is close to expiring. After your Prime membership or Prime free trial expires or is cancelled, you cannot watch any Prime Instant Video titles unless you’ve also rented or purchased that title.

For about 9 months the camera on this device caused it to take weird pictures. It seems that along the way a firmware update fixed the camera problems I had earlier so this should not be a concern for users who use their tablet to take photos.

Amazon has made subtle improvements to this device over the past year. It’s not 100% Android compliant and doesn’t always run YouTube videos very well. Just hangs and you need to restart it. Other times w/ the same YouTube content it works. Weird. The interface has been improved and it has been reliable for the last year as an intermittent toy. This is the perfect device for a person new to tablets or heavily invested in Amazon Prime. The Prime interfaces are outstanding and the device is intuitive and easy to use. Is it better than an iPad? It’s different. If you use Amazon a lot I’d give the HDX a try. If you use Apple all the time, an iPad may be a better choice. It’s very personal and subjective.

Amazon really owes it to their faithful customers who purchase these devices to continue to clarify the Prime download experience and this will be a home run. I hope these comments help you ask good questions and help Amazon continue improve their product and content experience.

I’ve been an apple guy since 1994. I learned how to program on the Iic and have been using just about every version of the macbook and iPhone since it’s inception. I’ve also been a very proud iPad owner since day 1. I still have my original iPad and bought both the iPad 2 and most recently the iPad air. The iPad air is a remarkable device, it is gorgeous, thin and light. I realized quickly however that iOS 7 was not ready for primetime on the iPad air. Not to mention that I was having memory crashes 5-6 times per day. On mobile safari, I would have two web pages open and the device would slow down. If I opened a third tab and went back to one of the original two, they would both need to reload. On top of all that, even though I am fully vested in the apple ecosystem (I purchase all my apps, music and movies through iTunes), I was quickly realizing that the competition was catching up very quickly.

That’s what lead me to the 8.9 HDX, mind you, I tested out the Galaxy note 10" as well as the Nexus 7 for a "true" android experience. I found jelly bean to be no different than ice cream sandwich which was marginally better than the last version. I know android purists will say there is a huge difference and jelly bean was designed for tablets, but in all honesty, android is just a boring experience. Even with a gorgeous screen as there is on the nexus 7, it has the occasional stutter, and I don’t find the operating system intuitive with the exception of google now, I swear they’ve got spies in my house.

With all that said, the HDX is the first truly different tablet experience in almost four years. You will be truly dumbfounded by how light this thing is. I mean after holding an iPad air, you’ll feel like this weighs nothing. But even with the lightness there is a "heft" to the device, one that gives it a presence. And 8.9" is the perfect size. I mean PERFECT. You can hold it in one hand in landscape easily. And the rubberized plastic feels phenomenal. From an iPad guy, this thing is neck and neck when it comes to design. Yes, it doesn’t have an aluminum back, but the front screen feels so much better. The iPad Air screen felt plasticky in comparison to previous versions.

The OS on the HDX is good. I like the launcher. It doesn’t give me the feeling of completeness that IOS does by allowing me to customize and launch different apps, but it does it’s job well. I’ve always wondered why Apple didn’t just have a live screen that automatically selected the apps I use most often and put them on the front page. That’s where Mojito’s (as an aside, dear Amazon and Android, stop. being. cute. Just give me a OS Version number, I can’t wait for Android "lifesaver" or "mint julep") carousel comes into play. It updates as you use it.

Oh, and I know some folks like to use tablets for productivity, but let’s be honest, they are purely entertainment consumption devices. I realized that quickly with my previous iPads. As much as I liked having email, iMessage, FaceTime, office suites, etc, the reality was that I used my iPad to browse the web, shop, read, and watch movies. Guess what, that’s what the kindle fire focuses on. This is not a laptop replacement, this is not a post-pc device, it’s the dessert you know you shouldn’t have but realize after eating that it was the best thing ever.

Prime Content is not exactly amazon’s strong suit unfortunately. I love prime, I’ve been a prime user for a very long time. The streaming features of prime are ok. Decent shows (like the most recent daily show) and movies (most of Marvel’s latest flicks) are available. But I’m paying 7.99 for netflix and until Amazon shows me content like that, I’ll stick with my buddy. Prime again is ok, not bad, not great, it does the job, but don’t buy this for prime. You can obviously buy all the same shows and movies on amazon that you could on iTunes, but from a free content perspective, prime isn’t the driving factor behind this device.

So, should you get the HDX, here’s a few questions for you:

How vested are you in google’s or apple’s ecosystem? Have you purchased dozens of apps, more importantly, do you use the dozens of apps you’ve purchased?

How important is productivity software to you? Do you have to check email constantly on your tablet, open attachments, edit documents? Or do you find that using a laptop or other PC a better solution for that?

Do you play lots of tablet games?

Finally, where do you get most of your content and do you purchase, torrent, stream? There are ways to get movies from both the play store and iTunes to the kindle fire legally and easily.

I found for myself, that a laptop is the best solution, and with today’s ultra books and the macbook air, you can get a small, light laptop for under $1000 that does exactly what you need. But for content consumption, the kindle fire is very hard to beat.

LOVE THIS TABLET!! I was searching for a new tablet to use with the new Global Sim from FreedomPop.. It was between this, a nexus tab, and several lower end tablets.. Honestly, I use my Kindle Fires more than any tablet I have ever owned (Including Ipad and pure Android Tablets) so I decided on upgrading my 7inch HDX to this refurbished 8.9inch LTE version!! Happy with my decision!!

FreedomPop – I received the tablet and popped in my FreedomPop sim.. Manually added the APN freedompop.foggmobile.com and free DATA!! The new Global Sim by FreedomPop gives you 200MBs for free and if you have 10 friends (Easy to find online VERY EASY) you can get another 500MB for free each month.. SO I get 700MB of free data EVERY MONTH using this sim!! Complete some of the easy offers they have and earn even more FREE DATA! The sim WORKS GREAT with the HDX.. I get about 8MB/SEC which is AWESOME (Please note, the FreedomPop Global Sim is NOT LTE so this is the reason for slightly slower speeds)..

Fire Vs Android – Fire is a version of android but it’s biggest drawback is the lack of Google Play.. I get around this using an app called APKPURE downloaded off the internet onto my fire TAB and it has virtually EVERYTHING that google play has and virtually all of it works on the Kindle Fire.. So the lack of Google Play isn’t an issue for me.. I personally like Fire OS and find it slightly easier to use and find that it works GREAT on tablets.. This also led me to my decision of this over a Nexus or other LTE tab.. Finally, I am heavily into prime and it’s services.. Yeah, all these services work GREAT on pure Android BUT it works so NATURAL on Kindle Fire.. Using my Prime services more than other services is the reason I have always used my Kindles much more than other tablets..

Why go Refurbished – AMAZON does a GREAT job refurbishing their units.. Basically, you get a BRAND NEW UNIT!! They are fully tested and usually have new batteries in them.. They have new screens, new casings and everything.. By looking at the tablet you would NEVER KNOW it was refurbished!! You get FULL warranty and everything.. Save money and go refurbished!!! I have owned several amazon branded refurbished products and never had an issue!

Pros
1.) Screen – The screen is wonderful!! This tablet has the best picture of any tablet I have owned.. Even better than my Ipad with a retina display! I also noticed the 8.9 inch doesn’t have the funky blue ring around the screen which I was very happy about

2.) Network – Works excellent on my WiFi and I LOVE having the MOBILE network option!! Works excellent with my FreedomPop sim

3.) Excellent SOUND!!!

4.) Perfect Size – I have always felt ipads feel to big in hand.. I love the size of the HDX and feel like it is the perfect size for a tablet!!

5.) Fire OS – I know a lot of people HATE fire OS.. BUT I personally like it!! I feel it works GREAT on tablets and I prefer it over pure android when it comes to my media tablets

Cons
1.) Doesn’t Have Google Play
2.) A lot of apps aren’t in the Amazon App store (But you can fix this by downloading apkpure) Instructions below!

Instructions for Downloading apps not found in the Amazon store (There are several other app stores to use BUT I use APKPure)

1.) Go to settings and click "Applications"
2.) Click "Allow applications from other sources"
3.) Open "Silk" (the internet on your fire) and google APKPURE
4.) Download APKPURE
5.) Install it on your tablet

Now you have access to VIRTUALLY ALL apps found in google play!!

Overall: GREAT Tablet! I LOVE MINE

I owned the Kindle Fire HD, but traded it in for the HDX…as advertised it is noticeably lighter; it is a bit smaller – I kept the case for my HD, and the HDX has a little extra room in the case. The volume control (which doubles as a zoom control when in camera mode) is on the back of the unit by the headphone jack, and the on-off button is next to where you plug the unit in — a BIG improvement over the HD side volume and power controls. This unit has plenty of tools for the visually and hearing impaired; a big step forward from the HD. BUT, there’s something Amazon ISN’T telling you…and I have no idea why they aren’t using this as a selling point. The HDX has VOICE RECOGNITION…when ever the on-screen keyboard pops-up, there’s a button right by the space bar that has a microphone on it; so instead of typing something in, you hit the microphone button…a little graphic equalizer animation comes on, and you say whatever you would have typed, push the microphone button again when you’re done, and all of a sudden you see the text you were going to type in the blank you would have typed it in! I haven’t worked much with voice recognition software, and I really wasn’t expecting much — it has done a GREAT job…in fact if you’ve got some kind of audio source across the room you’ll need to turn it down/off..when I wasn’t speaking the unit recognized every word from the source across the room! Do you see ANYTHING about this feature in Amazons promotions??? Maybe I need to try that ‘panic’ button and ask them why they’re keeping this secret! Fortunately I haven’t had any reason to use the ‘panic button. I’m tempted to try it one day and exclaim "I can’t find my keys and I’m in a panic, can you help!?" (I probably WON’T) GREAT variety of EVERYTHING..movies…apps…music…games…AND don’t forget about that FREE APP of they day Amazon has EVERY SINGLE DAY…I’ve got about 15 app/games I’ve installed (since they are FREE) that I haven’t even TRIED yet. I’m just planning to keep this unit as nice as possible so perhaps I can trade it in when Amazon decides to release their next ‘tablet’.

After 15 months, my $500+ tablet is no longer useable. It is stuck on the boot screen. I invested a lot of $$$ into Amazon movies and books. This stinks.

I upgraded from the KFHD 8.9 and the new HDX doesn’t disappoint in any way. It is better at everything than the “old” HD.

The screen on this thing in STUNNING. It has the nicest screen of any electronic device that I own. The colors are bright and crisp, movies are wonderful on it.

I can actually browse the internet on the HDX. Sure I could have used the KFHD, but the experience was’t great. The HDX makes it so easy, the pages load fast, Silk is pretty good (but I sideloaded Chrome-which I prefer), just an altogether better experience.

My wife grabbed the HDX and couldn’t believe how light it was. It is very thin and light.

MISC: No blue haze on reading books like it’s little brother has (7″ HDX), I sideloaded an earlier Flash version from Adobe which works well, the iCade bluetooth controller works with the HDX. Downloading movies in the best setting takes up A LOT of memory. The back camera works well and comes with a bunch of edits that you can do to the pictures (create a MEME, as mustaches, etc)

I own one of the older Kindle Fires and was excited to receive this as a gift from my husband. It worked OK in the beginning but within a few months it began shutting itself down. It would not come back on unless you did the hard reset, which is holding the power button down for 30 seconds. This issue continued along with the fact that it would drop your internet connection and it would not update your email unless you shut it completely off. After a few months of this my husband convinced me to contact Amazon. The tech I talked to told me that the covers that Amazon sold could be part of the problem and I removed it. He also tried to get me to reset to factory defaults and I asked to wait and let me give the coverless Kindle a try.
It was better but still not right. Finally I had enough when it shut down on me over 12 times in a row. Each time staying on less than 45 seconds and freezing. I did a reset to factory defaults in one of my 45 second windows. When I tried to set it up again, it froze up. Needless to say, I once again contacted Amazon and once again, I had to speak with someone that I could not understand. He tried to get me to reset again and would not listen when I told him it wouldn’t stay on long enough for me to do anything. I got frustrated and hung up on him.
My next step was live chat. I chatted with someone and explained my problem He must have clocked out for the day because suddenly I was chatting with someone else and he wanted to know what the problem was again. He was not helpful and if anything I found him to be defensive. My only option he said was to return it and he had no idea about the covers being a problem.
I asked if I was going to get another new one or a refurbished one and he couldn’t tell me. Although he did agree to replace my cover. He is sending the cover with one day shipping and my Kindle with two day shipping. What sense does that make?
The only positive thing I can about it is the screen is nice when it does decide to work. If I had it to do over I would have asked for the iPad instead. Live and Learn. Don’t waste your money.

UPDATE 05/20/15:
I wanted to let everyone know that I received my refurbished Kindle Fire HDX yesterday. It was supposed to be here on Friday but even though I verified the correct address with the customer service rep twice, it was sent to another address that is not the main address on my account. I was able to contact another customer service rep and all they could say was that he made a mistake and then they had the Kindle re-routed to my home. I am not happy that I received a used Kindle and the first customer service rep I spoke with told me he would make a note in my file that since mine wasn’t used that often he would request a new one for me. As I stated before the last rep I spoke with wasn’t very nice and he couldn’t tell me what they would send. I will update if this one gives me any problems.

Before I start my review for this Kindle I want to say we have been Prime members for about 2 or 3 years, and have used Amazon for shopping prior to having Prime for 1 or 2 years. We have, during these times, always loved Amazon and felt they have Superb customer service, and products. This is also the 4th Kindle we have, having also purchased a 7 inch Kindle Fire Second Generation with ad’s – our original Kindle purchase, and two 7 inch Kindle Fire HDs with ad’s both bought at the same time this Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 64G with ad’s was purchased.

HOWEVER!!

This particular version of their Kindle (HDX 8.9) has been NOTHING but one disappointment after frustrating disappointment. I originally got my HDX 8.9 right after Valentine’s Day 2014 (ordered on Valentine’s as a gift for me). As I write this review it is 30 October 2014 @ 23:30 and this is the 3rd (!!!!) replacement (so 4th unit) I have had for the HDX 8.9. The first replacement was only 57 days after ordering my HDX 8.9, so not even a full 2 months after I actually received my Kindle, let alone ordered it!!

A couple of issues I have experienced have been consistent across each unit. Specifically boot looping – which is where the Kindle will not complete booting up. It will boot as far as the lock screen, but will then shut down again immediately and begin booting all over again. This will happen sometimes 1 or 2 times, or for as much as an hour straight whether plugged in or not, and with a full battery. At times I would have to do a hard shutdown/reboot to halt this process. I have also had issues with various apps (not always the same ones, so not a compatibility issue) spontaneously shutdown, including Amazon’s own Silk browser, books, movies, even the Gallery for photographs.

This last replacement (4th unit) was only received 2 days ago, and came out of the box misbehaving! With a 100% full battery, AND plugged in it shut itself off within an hour of coming out of the box. Apps I downloaded but had not used yet, such as Facebook – so it was not even signed in and had not even been opened yet after downloading, started giving me notices that (in this example) Facebook has stopped working and will be closed. This happened with 2 or 3 other apps I had not used yet after downloading, as well as with their Silk browser. Additionally with the Silk browser on this most current unit it has been spontaneously shutting down, opening new tabs spontaneously, and switching between tabs on its own.

As I continue writing this review it is now four minutes after midnight on Halloween morning, and I just hung up from talking with Amazon customer service just before I I began writing. After having gone through 3 prior units and now this 4th one I have had enough and demanded to speak with a manager of supervisor and to NOT be yet again shunted off to a “Kindle support specialist” to be offered yet ANOTHER replacement. To finally “resolve” my issue I am to receive a refund of my purchase price minus $80 for whatever obscure and unexplained/garbled reason.

Being otherwise very happy Amazon Prime members for these years to say we are disappointed over the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 is putting things mildly. Will buy more Kindles? Certainly. Will we buy any other HDX 8.9’s? I can say unequivocally, HELLS NO! Nor will I suggest this version to anyone else. As a matter of fact, I would highly suggest to you reading this review, or anyone with whom I would speak with, to run the other way if you have been considering the purchase of this version of the Kindle. By all means, purchase another version of Kindle, but absolutely do not buy this version.

***UPDATE 22 Nov. 2014***

On the 16th Nov. I only received $30.73 as a refund for this return. You know what happens next… yep… I was right on the phone to Amazon raising hells. Took over an hour but I finally was told that I would receive $321.20 within 2-3 business days refunded to my original purchase method. OK! Cool, progress. I even got an email this time verifying all I was told. 21 Nov 2014 I looked at the accounts again (this is 5 days after the just mentioned conversation). I still have not gotten my money!!!

So I called them, again… After 30 minutes on the phone with someone I could barely understand, and who seemed to not have a clue as to what was going on, and being put on hold more than he was actually talking to me he finally tells me I received my refund of $30.73 already. Have you ever witnessed the verbal version of the atom bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki?? Well, the guy got just that. I went off. After excusing himself to look into something i was put on hold again. Then he comes back on and informs me that I will need to talk to the Kindle Support team do deal with this issue as this is one of there products. “So you just kept me on the phone with your inept, inadequate arse for 35+ minutes for NOTHING!?!? If this is something you are not capable of handling (obviously) you should have bumped me to them within the first minute of talking to me!!”

So I am again put on hold while I wait for the Kindle Specialist to pick up so I can go through this all AGAIN!!

So long story short (and it was long. Took me over an hour on the phone, with lots of “umm”, “uhh”, and being placed on hold while she “does some research on the issue”.)
So, like I said, long story short. The person I spoke with on the 16th, did send me am email for what was suppose to be happening, but did not get things into the system for things to actually get done. So I was no getting a refund from that call. This operator I was talking with already had he supervisor by her working with her to get it fixed. She got my refund set up to be gotten within ….2-3 business days (grrrr) and she would be calling me back on Wednesday the 26th (the 3rd business day) to verify I had received my refund. I also got an email from her about all of this, and a word from her supervisor that the person from the 16th who screwed up, AND the supervisor from 27 Oct. who started this who mess are going to be hunted down, formally reprimanded over how this has been handled, and they will also begetting written reprimanded that will go in their record.

That is all well and good they are going to deal with the parties who did not follow through with my account issue like they are trained to do, but I am glad Amazon is going (supposedly) to do something to encourage this to not happen again. But I will not be happy until I HAVE MY MONEY!!!!

And guess what hit my account at midnight???/ You guessed it! My $321.20 refund. About damn time. Now I can order my http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IKPYKWG/ref=nav_shopall_k_hd7
since I DO know they work just fine!! lol

I will write a review for the other kindle after I get it. Look for me over there. I will udate this review again if there is a reason for it.

BUT REMEMBER!! DO NOT LET THEM STONE WALL YOU ABOUT REFUNDS. SOME WORKERS WILL LIE TO YOU IN HOPES YOU ARE ONE THAT WILL NOT KNOW BETTER. YOU CAN, CAN, CAN GET YOUR MONEY BACK SO LONG AS THE PRODUCT HAD NOT BEEN PHYSICALLY DAMAGED BY YOU IN NEGLIGENCE, THEN YOU CAN GET YOUR MONEY. YOU JUST HAVE TO BE PERSISTENT!!!

I decided to purchase this tablet after my children broke the screen on my Kindle Fire 8.9 (non HDX). I felt it was a better choice than the new Fire HD 8 since the older HDX has higher resolution, is smaller, lighter, and comes in 32gb. I also took a chance on Certified Refurbished since that’s never been a problem for me, at least not with Amazon items. I was excited at first; this is a very sleek, lightweight, and attractive tablet, and the screen looked incredible… but the problems started immediately.
Tablet #1: the first tablet I received died after performing the mandatory updates. I used it for all of about 6 minutes, completed setup, and agreed to the new software update. It never came back on. I spoke to Kindle support and they quickly diagnosed it, issued a replacement, and sent it my way.
Tablet #2: the second tablet lasted a little longer. I received it the next day, always appreciate Amazon’s quick response time on replacements and refunds. Completed setup, performed updates (fingers crossed), and started using it… no problems at this point. The problem with this device started a couple days later. For some reason it wouldn’t show Amazon Instant Videos, at all. Every video I clicked on pulled an Error Message. At first it was "unable to show this video… reboot your device." Then it just started saying "unknown error" and wouldn’t even try to play. All applications, online videos, websites, everything worked fine, but it wouldn’t show anything from Amazon Instant Video. This time I called Amazon support and almost lost my mind talking to them about it. I think I spoke to 7 "specialists" over a 2-day period, and none of them could help. At least twice they put me on hold and hung up, I figure that’s easier than admitting that they have no idea what’s wrong. I finally agreed to get another replacement, and received it a couple days later.
Tablet #3: the best so far. This tablet worked fine on almost every level. System update, full setup, plays videos, works like you would expect (and like every other Kindle I’ve ever owned). I used this device for a few weeks, slowly but surely noticing some of the little quirks of the HDX. It seemed to lose WiFi connection quite a bit, and it took me a few days to figure out that this was a real problem. I did everything I knew how to do… reset my router, issued a Static IP, changed from WEP to WPA and back again. Nothing seemed to work, and the problem happened everywhere I tried to use consistent WiFi. This wasn’t a huge problem, except when I was watching a video and lost the connection every few minutes. It got to where I would drop the connection and have to reboot, reconnect, or cycle on/off every 10 minutes or so. An easy web search will show you that this is an enormous problem with the HDX tablets, and Amazon hasn’t seemed to address the issue in any way!! I’m guessing this is one reason why the HDX line has disappeared entirely. I called support again and spoke to 5 different representatives, over the course of about 3 days, who were no help whatsoever. I finally decided to ask for a supervisor. He was nice, didn’t seem to care a whole lot, but convinced me to return the tablet and purchase a new HD 10. He said he would cover the cost of overnight shipping and throw in an Amazon case for my trouble, and that he would call me back later that afternoon to make sure I completed the purchase without any problems. He never adjusted the shipping costs, didn’t throw in a cover, and never called me back. Typical.
Tablet #4: The new HD 10 is pretty cool, working great and doing what it’s supposed to do.

I’ve read a few of these reviews and I’ve had my HDX since release day. Here is my take on this, my second Kindle Fire. I’ve been waiting on a tablet with decent resolution that will play HD video smoothly… I tried a few different tablets for this and I was dissatisfied with the video display or the smoothness of the rendering.

My search is over. The Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 is a marvel. The color reproduction is fantastic – truly, you have to see this with your own eyes to really appreciate how stunning this display looks. HD video streamed from Amazon Prime is so good I almost prefer watching on this screen over my TV. My laptop looks like a piece of junk next to this… not to mention the sound! WOW! It’s loud, clear, without being overly tinny. Again, blows all three of my laptops out of the water. My wife and I just watched an episode of Firefly streamed from Prime (yes!) with it sitting on a stool while we were on a couch and it both sounded and looked great!

The camera is far better than I expected – even the forward facing camera is of solid quality. But, considering this isn’t why I bought the tablet, I haven’t really run the camera through any real paces.

Bluetooth connection is solid. I’ve connected my headphones and a song sheet pedal (to switch between pages on chord charts for guitar) and both devices paired and worked as expected with no problems.

I’ve actually used the Mayday feature twice – both times I was connected within a minute to someone who was cheerful and ready to assist. Best tech support experience I’ve ever had. Maybe it’s because you can actually see these people (though they can’t see you), they were professional and courteous and seemed genuinely interested in my issue with a desire to help me fix the problem.

Turns out they’ll have to send me a new Fire because my issue seems hardware related (lock screen image never changes and I’ve had two random restarts and a force close on the Store). So… do you see that… even WITH those issues, I’m incredibly pleased with this device. I have spent HOURS on this thing, reading, listening, playing games, watching videos, downloading content, editing documents, taking notes… and except for the few times I mentioned… this thing has been flawless.

This is one of the best electronic devices I have ever purchased.

So… glowing review… why only 4 stars? The browser. Silk is simply terrible. Sideload Dolphin HD and sideload Flash… you will be sorely disappointed with your web browsing experience if you don’t. To this day I’m still not sure why Amazon isn’t just allowing Dolphin to be installed from the app store. Having to sideload a browser is the only downside to this.
